Florentine mosaic workshop

The "Florentine commesso" or "Florentine mosaic" is an artistic technique that had its peak at the Medici court. The term "commesso" comes from the Latin committere (joining). This technique uses various kinds of stones, cut with a metal wire, according to a precise design, then glued on rigid supports such as tables, furniture and then polished. Traditionally flowers, landscapes and figures are reproduced with the use of various coloured stones.
